For tens of thousands of years, people have been using stories to understand themselves and others. Stories inspire and provide insight; they appeal to the emotions and the intellect. Customers rank storytelling, in the form of word of mouth and case studies, as one of the highest influencers in their buying habits.

A strong company story will establish a bond with customers. It's a critical online brand-building tool, especially if you can get your customers and employees to participate.

All in the Family

The Hinckley Co. has been building yachts in Southwest Harbor, Maine, since 1932. The company prides itself on its commitment to quality and personal service.

The company Web site documents the care that goes into the company's handcrafted vessels with photos and stories of employees. There's Vinny, who polishes a piece for 80 to 100 hours to get the perfect finish, and there's Jerry, who has constructed tanks at Hinckley for 34 years.

The company refers to its boats as "our babies," and encourages customers to send stories and photos of their adventures to be published on the site. The site also offers details of the Hinckley Rendezvous — an annual gathering of Hinckley boat owners and their vessels — complete with photos and videos.

Every business, no matter its size, has a story that can deepen customer relationships and distinguish it from competitors. Your story is worth telling — it's part of your company's identity.

Involve Your Customers

A Napa Valley, Calif., family-owned and operated winery, Cakebread Cellars, tells two stories on its Web site: The story of the winery's early days, when friends and family would don old clothes and come pick grapes, and the continuing involvement of seven family members in all winery operations.

Because the winery's name is unusual — and the source of frequent questions from customers — the Cakebread family uses it to lead the storytelling. The family forebears in England were bakers, primarily of a loaf called a cakebrede. Building further on this story, Cakebread created a Baker's Club, which gives members discounts on wines, invitations to members-only events, and opportunities to purchase limited-production wines.

Cakebread employs the creativity and interactivity of the Web to get closer to customers by sponsoring an annual photo contest. Customers submit photos featuring themselves, family or friends — enjoying a bottle of any Cakebread Cellars wine or displaying an item of Cakebread Cellars clothing in a creative way or in an exotic locale.

This approach succeeds because stories of customers sharing their brand experiences are more authentic and interactive than any print ad could be.

Soldier On

For employees, a company's story serves as a way to reinforce employee beliefs and direction. The story lets them experience the passion of the founders and feel connected to the company's roots. It enables employees to experience and live the mission and other aspects of your brand. It also answers the questions — for employees, customers and partners — "Who are we?" "Where did we come from?" and "Where are we going?" By using one story as a foundation, all employees can speak consistently about company history, current actions and vision.

To reach employees and/or customers, a company can adopt a story instead of telling its own. Trendwest Resorts, a Seattle vacation ownership company, uses storytelling to educate and instill company values in employees.

One of the company's values is for employees to be "Garcialike." This concept is based on the story of a soldier charged with delivering vital documents to Garcia, a rebel leader encamped in the mountains of Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The soldier spent four days in an open boat, landed by night off the coast of Cuba, went into the jungle and in three weeks came out on the other side of the island, having traversed a hostile country on foot to deliver his letter to Garcia.

The delivery of the message to Garcia has become synonymous with loyalty, dedication and the ability to stay focused. Trendwest tells this story to all employees and presents "Garcia awards" to recognize exemplary employees.

Happily Ever After

The stories of strong brands are never-ending tales. But be sure to walk the line between telling the company's history and allowing employees and customers to be part of creating the story. The story will continue to grow as long as there are new challenges for the company to overcome, and as long as participants are recognized for their contributions to company lore.

So draw up a chair, gather 'round the fire, and start spinning those yarns. You'll distinguish your business and be rewarded with deeper customer and employee loyalty and greater stickiness on your site.
