Blog Your
Way to New Content
By Veronica
Yuill
|
It has become one of
the truisms of the Web: If you want people to return to
your Web site again and again, you must keep the content
fresh and up-to-date. Now
hands up, those of you who would like to do this without
having to call your Web designer every time you have a new
product announcement, an upcoming event to publicize, or a
new news release.
Not only do updates cost money,
they take time.
In this article, I'm going to
tell you about a great way for a small business to solve
this problem without spending a pile of money.
Of course, you could always shell
out thousands for a "content management system" that would
allow you to manage your entire site using a content
database. But many small businesses don't need to change
any or all the pages on their sites at the drop of a hat.
If you just have one or two
What's New pages to keep up to date, Blogger might be just
what you need — and it's free! Even if you are a whiz at
HTML, Blogger is such a quick and easy way to maintain a
frequently updated page that it's well worth knowing
about.
What Is Blogger?
The verb to blog
is an abbreviation of Weblog — a page of date-stamped
entries about just about anything, rather like an online
diary.
On first encountering the term
and visiting a few blogs, I confess, I was not impressed.
Most blogs seemed to be written by bored Generation X
adolescents listing the contents of their handbags or the
television shows they watch, in excruciating detail. And,
frankly, some of them were weird.
I had to ask myself: "Why?" Why
did this person feel the world needed to know about this?
Then I realized the strangeness and apparent pointlessness
of many personal blogs masked a tool that is genuinely
useful for business Web sites.
Many bloggers maintain their
pages using the free service provided by
Blogger. Once you have
registered, you can update your blog simply by visiting
the Blogger Web site and filling in a form. The new entry
automatically will be added at the top of the page you
have specified for your blog.
It doesn't take much imagination
to see that this system could equally be used to maintain
a What's New page.
And the great thing about Blogger
is that your Blogger-updated pages are hosted on your
site. You have full control over their appearance, so you
can design them to fit in with the look of your site.
Blog On Regardless
First of all,
visit Blogger and sign up for a new account. You can do
this direct from the home page. You'll be taken through a
series of setup screens in which you provide the necessary
information for Blogger to be able to publish your pages.
You need to tell Blogger the file
transfer protocol (FTP) address of the site on which
you'll post your pages and the name of the page you'd like
updated when you post new items. This page will be created
if it doesn't exist.
You can also give it your FTP
user name and password, so it can log in automatically to
do the updating.
Personally, I prefer to leave
those fields blank and type in user name and password each
time. If you're not sure about the details required here,
ask your ISP or Web designer for help.
You can also indicate if you want
your blog to be public, that is, to appear in the
directory on the Blogger site. Being private doesn't mean
it's not visible on the Web, just that it isn't listed in
the directory. For a company news page, you don't need to
make it public. |

Blog
to Fit
Now, specify the
template you want to use for your blog. If you don't know HTML,
fear not. You can select from a gallery of attractive templates
simply by clicking on the one you want.
If you're
setting up a news page for a business site, you'll probably want
it to match the rest of the pages. That's not a problem. Any
competent Web designer will be able to create the necessary
template for you, and you can paste it into the appropriate
place in your Blogger admin screen.
You may also set
formatting and archiving settings for the content: the maximum
number of entries on the page and how often to archive old
entries onto a separate page (to stop the main page getting too
long).
Once you've
completed the setup process, create your first entry and type in
some text. If you're using Internet Explorer, you'll see three
buttons in the top toolbar. These allow you to format text in
bold or italic, and to add links. These don't appear in
Netscape, so if you use that, you will need to type the
necessary HTML code yourself.
Ready,
Click, Publish
When you're
ready, click "post and publish." This will let you check that
your FTP settings and template are OK. Once the publishing
process is complete, click "view page" to see your page in a new
window.
From now on,
whenever you want to add a new item, just log into Blogger and
copy or paste your text into the posting window, then click
"post and publish." From the Blogger administration page, you
can also view, edit or delete your previous posts.
If you have more
than one page to update, create several blogs, one for each
page, with descriptive names to remind you which is which.
Blogger has
limitations. It doesn't allow the easy addition of graphics to
individual items (although your template can include graphics).
Then
there's the possibility that Pyra Labs, the company behind
Blogger, might go bust. It had serious financial problems
earlier this year but was bailed out by
Trellix,
a company that provides online Web-building tools.
Blog
This!
But even if
Blogger disappeared tomorrow, your content would still exist on
your site. You would only lose the ability to use Blogger to
update it.
On the plus
side, Blogger has additional features that let you take it
beyond the basics I've outlined. Skilled users can incorporate
Blogger content into dynamically generated pages or use
eXtensible Markup Language (XML) templates to add functionality.
You can add a
"Blog this!" button to your browser, which allows you to
highlight a section of a Web page and copy it into your blog
with a link to the source. And, most interestingly for business
use, you can set up a team, which allows other members of your
staff to update the page.
Once you
are comfortable using Blogger, check out the
How To section, which gives
detailed instructions for adding features to your blog.
So if site
updates are a headache, look at Blogger before investigating
more expensive options.
