Take Your
Banners to the Limit
By
Vic Spindler
Experts agree. Colorful,
animated graphics are key to creating an effective banner.
Yet animated banners can be thousands of kilobytes large —
far in excess of the 10-kilobyte (KB) limit imposed by
most sites.
The secret to creating
great banners is keeping within limits while producing an
attractive and dynamic image.
Come to Terms
Pixels.
The term pixel is a contraction of the words picture, or
pix, and element, or el. It refers to the number of
picture elements a device is capable of reproducing within
an inch of screen size. On the Web, it is 72 pixels per
inch. Exact limitations differ from site to site, so ask
the site owner for specifics before you start. Currently,
the most popular banner size is 468 pixels wide by 60
pixels high.
Loops. Many site
owners are skeptical of flashing, twinkling banners
because they distract viewers from site content. To make
sure your banner is accepted, it's wise to limit animation
to one or two cycles, or loops. This means your animation
can run from beginning to end only once or twice, after
which the banner becomes static.
File
size. For optimal download, site owners typically
limit banners to 10 kilobytes. This refers to the banner's
file size or amount of information contained in the
graphic. Every time a new color is used, more bytes are
added to the byte total. In addition, every time the
graphic changes, more kilobytes are needed. All visible
pixels add to the total.
Strategy, Strategy
First, graphics should
be compressed as much as possible. Compression refers to
the removal of colors so close in hue, saturation and
brightness that they are nearly indistinguishable from
surrounding colors. Removing these colors doesn't usually
affect the overall appearance of the image, but the
removal reduces the number of bytes required to render the
graphics. You can manually smudge or fill specific areas
to compress them further.
In addition, remember that when
creating animation, you begin with a background and add
layers. All visible pixels add to the total. This means if
each layer is 468 by 60 pixels, the total byte size will
be very large indeed.
Avoid this
problem by changing only small elements with each
additional layer. Rely on movement to create a dynamic
banner. Use solid colors and let the movement and the
message carry the day.

Watch This Space
Let's look
at a
banner ad created for our
company and review the steps we went through to meet the 10 KB
limit.
We built 13 steps or
layers to create the animation. Because all visible pixels add
to the total, if each of the 13 layers were 468 by 60 pixels,
the total byte size would be enormous. To solve this problem,
the only layer we created at full size was the background. Using
Photoshop, we created each additional step on a separate layer.
We wanted our selling
points to add themselves one by one in a series of steps.
On the next layer we
created the first step of the build, using a small rectangle
with the word "intuition." Because only visible pixels add to
the total, we used the color palette to limit the total number
of colors to black, white and couple of shades of gray for
smoothness. We compressed the number of colors using Photoshop's
ImageReady until you see the image begin to degrade.
After two more similar
layers, one for "education" and one for "science," we used two
versions of the "and chance" layer, one at half brightness and
one at full brightness. This was to provide a change in rhythm.
Movements in
graphics are like music; you set up a beat and create excitement
with variations and counterpoints. Bang, bang, bang, zoom!
Photo Finish
Then we wiped the
board clean to build the finale.
There are two ways to
change your background. You can put down another complete
background, which means using a lot of pixels, or you can
overlay graphics the exact size needed to mask what's already
there — in this case the small black box, right, and the blue
oval, left.
Next we added a smaller
white oval and our logo. Using Photoshop, our last additions
were a filter-generated "swipe" on top of the right-hand black
box for a transitional step and, finally, the tag line.
By compressing our
graphics as much as possible, changing only small elements of
the graphic and relying on movement to catch the viewer's eye,
we created an effective banner within the common 10 KB limit.
You can do the
same.
