Are You Cut Out for Small Business?

By Mary Ann Chapman

In times of slowdowns and layoffs, starting your own business might look attractive.

But are you cut out for the independent life?

It depends mainly on your temperament and lifestyle. Don't do it just for the money.

The best reason to go independent is you can't stand working at a job. This can be for many reasons including:

  • No job satisfies your desires to grow and explore at the rate and in the directions you choose.
  • Corporate politics drive you bonkers, or you're too candid and straightforward to be able to play, so you'll never move up.
  • You want to live in a certain area and no traditional jobs you want are available, so you have to create your own.

No one requires you to be somewhere at 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., with a one-hour lunch. Instead, you might be up and working at 6 a.m., meeting a prospective client for lunch, and continue working until ... well, until you fall over, with dinner at your desk — if you remember to eat it.

You might be at a seminar all day, learning great new stuff or finding out those people have nothing to teach you after all. Then you work into the night so it won't be a no-revenue day.

The Juggler's Art

At a job, a common complaint is that someone hands you work and, before you're through with it, hands you more work. You wonder how you'll get it all done.

If you think that's bad, being independent is worse. You might be working on four projects and reluctant to turn down another because it's just a good way to learn while getting paid. Of course, it might take three times as long to get it done.

At a job, twice a month you receive a check you might think is a little small for what you do. As an independent, you might get a check for $15,000 one month, none the next month, and one for $250 the month after that. And for that, you've had to allocate time for marketing, time-keeping, invoicing and collection.

One part of your brain is constantly occupied with what's in the pipeline and whether the next big check is coming in time to make the house payment. Maybe you're sitting with an extra $5,000 in the bank for a couple of months and you'd really like to use it as a down payment on a new car, but do you dare?

All About Flow

You don't sell yourself at hiring time then do your job, moving up because you do a great job and please your employer and co-workers. You have to sell yourself and your abilities over and over again, sometimes every day.

If you have one of those no-energy, light-deprivation months, you don't have a place where you can just go and do what you're told. It's really easy for the month to evaporate and you to have nothing accomplished and no money coming in.

On the other hand, when a project is off and running, you set the project schedule and, with that, your own work schedule and vacation schedule.

When the economy falters and your laid-off compadres are lined up at recruiters' offices, or when a personality clash turns ugly and you're out the door, you have work in the pipeline and just move to the next client.

Even if you don't have more work waiting, as an independent you will have developed the resources to find some or make some, whatever it takes to keep going.

Try It on the Side

If you are thinking about going independent, I suggest you try your hand at freelancing in addition to your job. See if you're comfortable selling yourself and your services and working long hours to get everything done.

Build up a little backlog. When you get to the point that with the additional luxury of all day to work on it, you could make enough money to get by and if the independent lifestyle and work style appeal to you, go for it.

A good intermediate step might be to find someone who is independent or owns a small business and would be willing to subcontract some overflow to you. This would provide a continuous revenue stream, even if you have to augment it with your own sales. Leaving your job and contracting with your employer also works for some people.

Your existing expertise might have a narrow focus, but your greatest success will come with expansion of your areas of knowledge. Learn everything you can that is even remotely related to your initial interests.

The more you can offer a client, the more valuable you will be. And you might find your way into an area you like even more than what you do now.
