Even Banner Ads Have Standards

In the early years of Web advertising, there were no standard banner ad sizes. Banners were displayed in hundreds of shapes. This created confusion for buyers who wanted to display ads and sellers who wanted to feature them.

So in 1996, with the support of the advertising community, the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), and the Coalition for Advertising Supported Information and Entertainment (CASIE) announced joint recommendations for eight standard banner ad sizes.

While these sizes are strictly voluntary, they serve as a useful model for ad sellers and buyers, and they are the most commonly accepted now. Here they are in order of popularity:

Full-size banner: 468 by 60 pixels. Also known as a "traditional" banner, this is the most widely used banner size. It is more popular than all other ad sizes combined. These banners commonly appear at or near the top of a page and are aligned horizontally in the center.

Some sites might have the same full-size banner at the bottom of the page. Similar but nonstandard full banner sizes commonly used are 460 by 55 pixels, 460 by 60 pixels, and 480 by 60 pixels.

Square button: 125 by 125 pixels. Also called a "badge," this button is normally placed on the sides of Web pages or within suitable text. If more than one square button appears on a page, the ads will usually appear vertically aligned with each other. Other square button sizes exist, but this is the most popular size.

Rectangle button: 120 by 60 pixels. This size works well within or next to content on a page, but it is sometimes featured on the sides of a page like other buttons.

Half banner: 234 by 60 pixels. Notably featured at the top of the home pages of popular sites, such as Yahoo!

Off-rectangle button: 120 by 90 pixels. Not a distinctive rectangle but slightly wider than it is tall. This size is popular for use along columns of Web pages.

Micro button: 88 by 31 pixels. The smallest of the group; this banner can be found on the sides or bottoms of pages, in or near the inside page content, running side-by-side with other micro button ads, as part of a sponsorship promotion, and sometimes with a matching text link underneath. Micro buttons can be seen on the CBS MarketWatch site.

Full banner with vertical navigation bar: 392 by 72 pixels. The name is sometimes confused with the more popular full-size banner, but it is usually given the same placement on a page.

Vertical banner: 120 by 240 pixels. These banners are featured on the sides of pages. Their use has declined recently. Even nonstandard banner sizes are more widely used today than the standard vertical banner.

One nonstandard banner size rapidly gaining popularity is the skyscraper banner. This long, vertical banner is sometimes also referred to as a "side panel" because it is featured on the side of a page. Skyscrapers are usually anywhere from 120 to 150 pixels wide and 400 to 800 pixels tall. Advertisers find this banner appealing because visitors can still see the banner as they scroll the page.

Some Web sites currently displaying skyscraper ads include MySimon, ZDNet, and Forbes.

While these banner sizes are the most widely accepted, many ad publishers do not allow all the sizes on their sites. Others offer unique sizes not listed here. Some publishers are flexible and will let you feature a banner nearly any size you wish. Be sure to ask the ad sales representative what sizes are allowed before you design your banner.
