A Lesson in
Click-Through Banner Ads
By
Grant Crowell
A common method of gauging
the effectiveness of a banner ad is to determine how many times
it has been clicked on. This is called a click-through ratio, or
"CTR" for short. This ratio is calculated by dividing
the number of times a banner ad is displayed by the number of
times it is clicked on. For example, if a banner has a CTR of 50
to 1, it means that 1 out of every 50 people who viewed that
banner clicked on it (this results in a 2% CTR).
Those who stand to benefit
the most from click-through banner ad campaigns tend to be
smaller companies, companies that have yet to achieve national
or even regional recognition, or those with a limited budget for
banner advertising. While a large company can afford to purchase
a great deal of Web space for repeated exposures of its banner
ads to saturate its target market(s) — as a branding
banner ad campaign does — the person who implements a
click-through banner ad campaign has to strive for maximum
effectiveness each time the banner ad is displayed.
While banner ad technology
is comparatively new, the rules regarding click-through banner
ad campaigns (which are often used by companies with a limited
budget) are the same as those you should follow when advertising
in any traditional media outlet. Your message has to be more
direct and more outstanding, because people will be less likely
to see it a second time around. Because of this limited
exposure, you have the advantage of being more aggressive with
your ad design style and content, even if it isn't necessarily
the image your company projects on its own Web site. And because
you have yet to establish a familiar impression in the minds of
your target audience, they will be less likely to judge your
company unfavorably by any predetermined conceptions. Hence, the
goal of a click-through banner ad campaign is simply to have the
largest amount of visitors in your target market click on your
banner ad the first time they see it. They may not be as likely
to remember it later, and they may not be as likely to ever see
it again.

Click-Through Banner Ad
Strategies
There are several proven,
effective strategies for click-through banner ad campaigns. Your
banner ad may call for an action on the end user's part (for
example, it may state what your audience wants or needs and how
they can use your company's product or service to get it), or it
may share strong feelings, such as humor or outrage. (One banner
ad could combine the two and allow you to figuratively throw a
pie in the face of a big tycoon who raises our gas prices.)
Another effective click-through strategy is to design a
"trick banner," in which the graphics look like actual
links or buttons and the ad itself may even blend into the Web
site it is running on.
But is a trick banner ad
in essence a form of deceptive advertising? No, and here's why:
In a trick banner ad, the content is still true to what is
actually being advertised. For instance, if you are a ticket
reseller and you have a banner ad with graphics of "trick
links" to things such as sports tickets, concert tickets,
and so on (but all these links lead to your site), people will
be clicking through to a site that has what they are expecting
— tickets. The banner ad may look like it's part of the
original site, but that is primarily to give people a sense of
familiarity, which is a very important trait in any advertising
campaign. Familiarity shouldn't be confused with deception, any
more than a fast-food chain using a popular movie trailer to
sell its product (such as Burger King using "Chicken
Run" characters or McDonald's using "Batman"
characters for their advertising) should be considered
deception.
A deceptive banner ad, on
the other hand, attempts to mislead the audience with a message
that is more appealing than what is actually being sold. One
example is a banner ad that promises "FREE Money: Click
here!" only to link viewers who click on it to an online
casino. Since it was never advertised in the banner ad
(graphic-wise or content-wise) that the actual service being
advertised is online betting, the vast majority of the audience
will click away from the gambling Web site as soon as they
arrive at it. A banner ad like this may generate a high
click-through rate, but this rate is a very poor indication of
actual effectiveness (such as increased revenue) of the ad. A
trick banner ad is different; it concentrates on a more defined
target audience, and the people who click on it will be much
more likely to have an interest in what the destination site has
to offer, thus generating a positive public reaction.
The disadvantage of using
click-through banner ads is that they force you to be more
selective with your target audience. If you make your banner ad
too general or even deceptive, you'll get a large number of
click-throughs but few sales. This can also cost a lot if you
have an account with a Web advertising company that charges you
per click-through. Make sure your banner ad is an accurate
reflection of what you're offering or takes people right to
where they're expecting to go.
